Festival Tour
Brilliantly masked and lavishly robed performers
Overview
Tsechus consist of a series of dances known as cham in the local language performed in honor of Guru Rinpoche by brilliantly masked and lavishly robed performers. The dates and length of the tsechus vary by region, but they normally take place on or around the 10th day of the Bhutanese calendar, which is dedicated to Guru Rinpoche. Tsechus are usually performed in dzong courtyards, which can be crowded as bystanders vie for a good view. The tsechu is a major event that draws people from all across the city. They are not solemn occasions, but rather festive occasions in which people dress up in their nicest apparel and jewelry, share their food, and exchange news. The Bhutanese believe that by attending the tsechus and observing the ritualized dances, they will get merit.
